By the word 'they' I mean to say that it could be just about anyone. It means you may have heard about some great tip that is short and sweet and should promise to work.

The problem with this is that those methods sometimes are not practiced by the author themselves. If they do, are there any results to show on their website. Check this as well. Let's get started about some common traffic mistakes.

• Submit Your Website To Web Directories. Sure you can get a little boost in your ranking or traffic by submitting your website to web directories. Thing is Google will soon find out people doing this regularly just to get a listing on their search results. So, its best you go natural and write content naturally.
• Create A Blog And Ping It Or Whatever. Okay, I have to be very careful here. This really works but sometimes its not explained carefully. You can ping but do not ping more often than once a week. You see, it really makes the search bots think that you are trying to draw attention. They might discount you out.
• Advertise On The Famous Craigslist. I know you have tried this and many marketers have even did it. Don't you think its about time you found another pool which still have some big fishes to catch? Trust me, this big website is getting a little crowded for the little guy.
• Submit Press Releases On A Regular Basis. Again, press releases should not be abused just to get traffic. It acts only as an official announcement such as when Microsoft will make a new bid to takeover Yahoo! or something. Not as a lead generation tactic. If you got a new product out, okay this is for you.
• Leave A Testimonial When You Like A Product. Please be cautious when you want to submit a testimonial to a person who created a product. Examine his credibility by seeing if your URL will be made 'active' which means its instantly 'clickable'. Also, leaving your testimonial means you are giving your social approval to someone. Do not just take it lightly.
  

There are many other mistakes that I might not be able to mention here. Just remember that the common ones are the ones you will see very often and those marketers which are doing so are sometimes teaching stuff which worked ages ago. Learn from someone in the now and is up to date.
